Kenya - MDA Kenya at the National Golf Tournament
The Kenya Golf Caddice tournament was an event planned by the Kenya Golfers Association to identify the best upcoming golfers who will represent the country in the East African tournament to be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The game is known only to be a reserve of the rich class all over the world. However, of late most countries including Kenya have began to absorb the common people to start taking the game as their professional career. The tournament held on Monday 7th at the Sigona Golf club attracted over 100 participants from major towns of Kenya including Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu. It kicked off at around 9 in the morning and ended at 6pm.

The main organizer of the tournament, Mr Joshua Kimemia, felt it worthy to include street children in the tournament so that they can also set their eyes on the game in future. Joshua is a member of the Street Children and Youth Organization Network (SCYION) where MDA Kenya is very active. He requested willing organizations to send children or participate in any way during the event.

Mr Kimenia specifically requested Doctors of Africa to support in the medical field by carrying out a simple medical and nutritional check up. MDA took up the challenge though on a short notice and decided to be on duty. By the end of the day, MDA performed nutritional assessement for the 12 children who attended. We also did a BMI, blood pressure tests for 100 participants of the tournament. All those received tests were also given counseling and mentorship especially on feeding habits. Since most of them exhibited alcohol and drug abuse trends, it was a great chance to spread the awareness campaign against the habit.

At the end of the exercise, MDA received a lot of appreciations from the organizers for their contribution to the event even though it was on a very short notice. We also made good networking with potential donors such as the Street Family Rehabilitation Trust Fund (SFRTF). The Chief Director himself who was the chief guest asked that we draft and forward him a proposal to work with the street children in the field of health and psycho social support. This has already been done. MDA will also be given priority for any such future events.
